About Jim

People tend to treat you nicer at the United Nations when you’re walking around with a former Secretary of State.

Jim Baird learned that on his first trip to the UN, launching the report of a global commission co-chaired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former Nigerian Foreign Minister Ibrahim Gambari. After launches in Washington, New York, and Europe, the report drew hundreds of citations and helped drive a conversation about UN reform that continues today.

Getting serious work in front of the right people has been his job for two decades. He led communications at the Stimson Center and Freedom House, briefed a former Secretary of Defense on US attitudes toward nuclear weapons, advised the foreign policy team of a US presidential campaign, and designed stakeholder engagement strategies at the local, state, and federal level for a leading academic institution, a Fortune 500 company, and a major government agency.

He’s trained dozens of leaders to become more effective advocates for their own work. He even served as an assistant to a member of the House of Lords, who did not, as it turns out, enjoy being called “my lord.”

Jim lives in Annapolis, Maryland, and is the state’s least skilled crabber.
